The owner is very welcoming, the room perfect for a solo traveller and a fabulous location. I was delighted by the little touches, like the small bowl of sweets, kettle with tea etc, biscuits, - they clearly care about the details. Good breakfast. - continental and Full English. Good sausages, bacon, black pudding, fresh tomato, beans (in a pot, without asking) and toast. I thought it was good value at £10. Nice bar. Loved the waterpressure in the shower too! I will stay here again.

A couple of minor points stopped it getting full marks and others may consider more important than me. But this was a great find. There was a tiny bit of mildew on the ceiling of the bathroom, but that is not uncommon where bathrooms have been retrofitted into very old buildings. I think the mattress was a coiled wire, so it twanged a few times, but it was still pretty comfortable and what you'd expect from somewhere offering such great value. You could hear the bar, but it wasn't a late night bar, so that's fine, and another nice touch was the provision of earphones in the room.

The room was clean, warm, comfortable and well presented, with nice touches like a little dish of sweets. The location was excellent, very central and it was easy to walk everywhere I wanted to go. It felt safe and secure for a solo traveller.

The room was a bit small, which was fine for one night but would have been cramped for more than a couple of nights. There was quite a steep flight of stairs to manage with luggage, which could present some travellers with problems. At times it seemed quite noisy, but I guess that's a price you pay for being very central.

Visited Durham for the illumination festival inside the cathedral. The City Hotel is quite nearby. Excellent clean and well presented room. Over a busy and full pub. Lady who showed us to the room was professional and most kind. All done quickly as she was serving on at the bar. Room snug and cozy on a blowy cold night. Although overlooking the busy outside street and over the pub was really quiet and peaceful. But was nice to think others were enjoying the friendly pub. Great facilities. You just turn on the heating as you wish. Easy access explained fully by staff. Enjoyable and would recommend to anyone visiting Durham.

The place was easy to find and there is on-street parking, the staff was lovely, professional, courteous and knowledgeable about the city, they gave me advice on where to park and where to eat. Wonderful staff, really, going above and beyond for our satisfaction and enjoyment of their place and the city. The room was clean, well decorated, rather large and full of amenities - plenty of towels, complimentary toiletries, a tea and coffee station, a TV, places to hang our clothes and to put our bags down. Spotless bathroom with tub. Really, really nice place. Functional BUT also cosy, we felt immediately comfortable there.

Very good location, perfectly clean room, well equipped, comfortable bed, easy check in and check out. A bit noisy if you opened the window (single glazed) but we didn't mind at all. I love when you can open the window at the hotel and I hate aircon, so a big plus for me. Plenty of restaurants in short distance.

The tv and internet did not work, staff member tried to fixed it with no results. We were offered free drinks at the bar downstairs as an apology, but we were too tired after whole day of walking and in our pyjamas already to be able to go down. A discount in price would be better, but we didn't ask and this wasn't offered.

The room and facilities were pristine, very comfortable and modern yet homely. There has clearly been a lot of thought, consideration and care that has gone into every aspect of the details. There were many little things which were actually big things in terms of making my stay feel special and me personally welcome. Although I didn't eat there I was grateful for the glass of sweets left out for me on the condiment tray and for the warm welcome and check in. Fantastic location, fantastic facilities and generally lovely people. I will definitely return!

Cannot comment on the food but what I will say is that more Vegan options are always welcome on the menu.

It has been recently decorated and is very stylish, comfortable and friendly. It’s also in a great location with an interesting walk to the shops, other bars and restaurants. The Cathedral and Castle are close by and I found a lovely place next to the river to have coffee which was very relaxing after a walk around the area. The owner/manager and staff were amazing and very accommodating. Really nice people. I’m looking forward to returning and have recommended the City Bar Hotel to my family and friends so they will also stay in the future when they visit Durham.

I was going with low expectations as it is a half hotel-half pub (related to noise which you can here some things but nothing crazy or constant) but it exceeded my expectations. The hotel is small, comfy and with a lot of British personality. The staff working there could not be more nice, incredible and welcoming. They do serve a full English breakfast that I cannot recommend enough, specially because of it's affordability. If I have to say something negative: Maybe it is time for the rooms to get a bit of a renovation, mainly the matresses though I did have a good sleep.

Warm welcome from bar staff, shown to room. Carried my bag. Well appointed, comfortable, clean. The selection of welcoming sweets was novel. Made me smile. Teas/coffees well stocked and excellent location near the centre. It was a single room. Cheapest I could find by the centre. Sizing was comfortable. Not cramped but not spacious. But good. Pleasantly surprised.

Was lucky to find a parking spot nearby. Something to consider if this is important to you.

The hotel was in a great location with easy access to the main historical sights. Check-in was easy and the team member was friendly and escorted me to my room. She showed me the various keys and clearly explained the access code for the security door. The room was a compact size, nicely decorated and very clean. The single bed was comfortable and there was adequate storage. There was a supply of tea/coffee and a chocolate, some sweets and biscuits which was a nice welcome.

The plumbing was quite noisy but didn't interfere with the enjoyment of my stay. There was some general noise in the evenings from the bar downstairs but was to be expected. The hotel had supplied some earplugs but I had brought my own. As it is an old building there are a number of stairs/landings to navigate. This was not a problem for me but would be if anyone has mobility issues.
