The hotel is whimsical and wonderful, albeit very small. Be ready to have a small/cramped room. The bathroom is very nice and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. We asked for extra blankets, and one of us needed an extra pillow, and we were granted these easily. We were also freely able to borrow umbrellas from the lobby staff for the outside weather. The hotel is right next to a bus stop that is easily accessible from Kyoto Station, which makes it very accessible. There is a laundry room. The location is perfect if you're visiting Kyoto. What you see in the booking.com pictures is very accurate to what you get.
This is just me nitpicking: -The mattress felt a little thin, unfortunately. -A lot of condensation would accumulate on the window overnight. - The rooms are very cramped/narrow, so it's not recommended if you have large luggage.

We had an expectation after staying in the Tokyo branch of Tavinos but Kyoto was even better. Same high standards of staff interaction, amenities, facilities, cleanliness and hygiene. But what made this one better was the layout of our room it worked better for us in Kyoto than Tokyo (was still comfortable there) Top tip You can check the status of the washing machines and dryers on the tv in the room which is handy. If you are wanting to do washing maybe start a day a bit later or come back around lunch time for a couple of hours as it gets very busy (someone waiting had 3 large bin sacks full of washing, there was a laundrette not too far away if you have loads though)
I don't mind a dark aesthetic at all but i can imagine for some it might be too dark even with the lamp as there are no overhead lights.

The hotel has a great location and extra amenities such as free coffee/tea throughout the day, free toiletries. There is a 7eleven downstairs just outside of it. They also serve some pastry every morning which was a nice surprise :) The staff doesn't speak English very well but at least they try to help you. The only thing we did not like are the lighting in the room (the walls are black so they soak the little light you have, despite the big window with blinds), and the matress which was too firm for our taste. They also give you one small pillow per person so I was waking up with neck pain every morning.

We had a great stay at HOTEL TAVINOS Kyoto! While the rooms are on the smaller side, this was expected and totally manageable for a short stay—especially if you're spending most of your time out exploring the city. One of the coolest features is that you actually get to choose your own room at check-in, which adds a fun and personal touch. Definitely try to arrive at 3pm sharp to get the best selection! The location is excellent—right near plenty of shops, restaurants, and very convenient access to buses, making it easy to get around Kyoto. Whether you're sightseeing or just out for a bite, you're right in the heart of it all. Another plus was the baggage storage option, which was super helpful for managing check-in/check-out times. Just a heads-up: the storage space can fill up quickly, so it's worth getting there early if you plan to use it. All in all, HOTEL TAVINOS offers solid value, a fun and modern vibe, and a great base for exploring Kyoto.
Not a fan of the all black decor, and lift a little slow for so many people.

Hotel Tavinos was a cool and fun hotel. The vibe of the lobby sets you up for the themed rooms whilst providing everything you need in a hotel. There was open and closed suitcase storage if you arrived early! It had perfect under-bed storage for suitcases to give you walking space, and we couldn't fault the bathroom. They had complimentary breakfast of different savoury/ sweet breads and coffee machines with condiments in the lobby. We were able to relax in the lobby at the funky tables and an outdoor area, too. The lobby had a couple of washing/ drying machines that were pretty occupied and required coins. It also had toilets and a vending machine for a quick and easy drink. You could buy cool Japanese slippers for only ¥500. It was situated in a good location to many bus services and a short distance from the train station. Only 10-15 minutes of walking to markets and shops.
It's not that I didn't like it, but if you want to have fun wasting money on the claw machine, go ahead, because we did 😂

The location is excellent, with two subway stations nearby and a bus stop right at the foot of the hotel. There's a 7-Eleven on the ground floor and a Fresco supermarket just across the road. It's within walking distance of the Gion neighborhood, various shrines and temples, as well as the shopping area. The beds are comfortable, and the shower is very good.
The room is poorly organized, lacking essential furniture such as a table, chair, cupboard, or drawers to store your clothes and belongings. As a result, you are forced to leave your clothes in your suitcase. The bathroom is similarly inadequate, providing only a tiny shelf for storage. Additionally, the light coming in from outside is dimmed by opaque windows. Accessing the bed is also impractical, as you need to climb up to it. Great for teenagers I imagine.

Modern style. Friendly staff and easy check in and check out. Good facilities, e.g., coffee, water, laundry, etc. Spacious common area to relax. 7-eleven literally downstairs. I enjoyed my stay here. Approx. 15 min walk into the center. The river is beside the hotel and it's nice to walk along. 10 min walk from Gojo station.
Not a major complaint but the rooms were a bit dark. My room was facing another building and the window could only open a few cms. So there was no daylight coming into the room. This is the design of the hotel though and I understand it cannot be modified. I would definitely still rebook despite this comment.

I loved the modern aesthetic of the hotel, the graphic design of the decor is really lovely, and having a 7-Eleven right next to the hotel is really handy. The staff were really friendly and the check in system was quick and easy. The reception and lobby area is really welcoming, with places to sit, tables and a drinks station where you can get a coffee or tea, warm up a meal in the microwave or get the complimentary breakfast pastries in the morning. A friendly place to relax, have a drink and meet people or socialise. We also made use of the washing machines and dryers, which were so convenient to refresh our clothes. The rooms are spacious and the bed is comfortable. I loved the decor and the corner lamp for ambience light. There was plenty of space under the bed for our suitcase and bags so we had lots of space to feel comfortable. The bathroom was split into two with a walking shower and washlet/basin area. The shower was really good and the shampoo, conditioner and shower gel were nice. I loved the luggage storage system, so easy to use and modern. The area is quiet and there is a larger supermarket called Fresco opposite the hotel. We took bus 206 from the train station to the hotel, and it stopped right next to it. We also walked and it took less than 20 minutes. A walk to Kiyomizudera Temple was also around 20 minutes. We had a very comfortable stay and would definitely recommend it and stay again if we return to Kyoto.
A fridge in the room would have been very handy for cold drinks in the evening but I understand the risk of having drinks in the room and potentially ruining the carpet and nice decor. Having the Konbini next door solves this issue, I guess.

Hotel located not too far from the main streets. The staff was kind and agreed to store our luggage before the check-in time. The room size was still okay for a few days trip and, considering the overall price, it was very convenient. Really like the design across the whole facility and the basic breakfast offered.
The room was a little bit dusty, still cleaned but not on a high standard. Considering how the rooms are designed I'd not be impressed by that - dust on dark surfaces is easier to spot so it was still okay considering the price. Overall, I'd definitely consider staying there again in the future.

We loved the fun designs on everything, the carpets, the walls, etc. We appreciated the pastries and water (hot & cold) always available at the lobby. There were also more things to rent, borrow or buy in the lobby like slippers, Yukata, books (mainly manga). It was amazingly convenient to have an entrance to the adjacent 7/11 directly attached to the ground floor. The hotel is less than a minute away from the nearest bus stop and not too far from the nearest subway station, although you’ll likely be taking the bus more than the subway for the tourist attractions. It is also across the street from a really good 24/7 food joint. The room was small but comfortable. Although we didn’t use the laundry service, we appreciated that the TV in the room told us which machines were available.
The bunk beds’ mattresses were slightly thin and the wood creaked a lot. We would have liked to have hooks in the bathroom. We think this hotel could benefit from offering its patrons help with luggage transfers, or at least with filling out the forms from 7/11.
