The room was simple, but comfortable, and perfectly suited to our needs. Those wishing large rooms or suites will find these readily available, but we didn't need such facilities. The staff, from the moment of our arrival to the time we left, were exceptional - friendly, helpful and always prepared to go the extra mile. In particular, when we found that we had a slow puncture, the receptionist arranged an appointment at a local garage for a repair and the hotel handyman pumped it up to allow us to get there. You won't get that level of service in many places! The pool and associated facilities were very good, and added to the overall pleasure of the trip. My wife is gluten intolerant, and we are agreed that the menu at the hotel made greater provision, across all meals, for someone with this condition than anywhere else we have stayed in the last decade. Even the dough for the GF pizzas is made on site! And they are a full 12" in diameter! We enjoyed a walk in the grounds and the Great Polish Map of Scotland, a relief map of the country, should be better known. The hotel provides a brochure giving the history of the building and grounds, a map of the latter and background on the major items of interest on site. This is an ideal base for visiting most of the Border area - we spent some time in Peebles and enjoyed a walk along the Tweed (see second image) and visited Dawyck Gardens and Rosslyn Chapel, among other places. We intend to return soon.

If you were going to be very 'picky', you could say that the room was tired, with squeaky floorboards, but the hotel is in the process of refurbishing the rooms, so this is really not an issue, and the impact upon our stay was minimal. In any case, the room was clean and the friendliness of the staff and everything else about our experience more than compensated for what can only be described as a minor quibble.

Stunning location Staff excellent in all areas but especially to the reception staff and the cleaning lady on the first floor who was always laughing and smiling ( didn’t catch her name but I wish I did )

Carpets need replacing. They are very worn in some place ,ripping and also a horrific piece of wood holding the carpet in place ie first floor . This has sadly let your castle down ROOM DOORS These do not lock by themselves and you have to put them shut which then causes a loud bang and if someone is still sleeping in the room this does wake them . I also noticed when walking along the corridor that a number of doors where still open this could cause issues

Staff were fantastic and dealt with the issues we had swiftly. Food was simple but tasty (3 course meal as part of a function and breakfast). Overall good but fairly basic for a 4*. We sadly didn't use the Spa facilities. These might and ramped up my opinion.

Being an older building the rooms were so hot/trapped the heat. They supplied fans in the rooms but had very little impact. We had the window opened and radiators (except bathroom as we couldn't turn that off) turned off. Our original room also had an issue with the sink plug being locked in the down position and we couldn't remove. It was quite an old fashioned room and when we were moved rooms, the new room had robes and slippers (we didn't use but it seemed weird we had it in one room but the other).

The welcome by the concierge was extremely friendly and informative (a real credit to the place) There was very large selection of Breakfast foods ranging from the fully fried, including Haggis, cereal, yogurts, cheeses etc. Evening meal menu was varied with a good selection to suit most appetites' (the stake pie was a particular favorite). The pool/spa although quite small was a nice feature and a good place to unwind. (gym available as well) The setting is beautiful and you can walk off into the woods for miles. Great location to do some exploring (Moffat, Grey Mare's tail waterfall, St Mary's loch, Megget reservoir, Talla reservoir) to name but a few places to visit.

The room décor and furniture was dated and you could hear ever step being taken, including from the rooms either side. With the room being pet friendly there is nothing provided in the room specifically designed for pets. The service in the bar (no pets in restaurant) was quite poor, although ordering from the table it took almost 40 mins to get our drinks, the food nearly arrived first... There were weddings taking place on both days of our stay (not necessarily a bad thing) but on the first evening all the wedding guests were in the hotel bar making it extremely full, noisy and not a pleasant eating experience. DEFINATELY MORE POSITIVES THAN NEGATIVES.

last minute booking due to cancellation of room at previously booked hotel ( by another hotel group), room was listed as a single ( last room at hotel) but was a small double which was a pleasant surprise, food very good with portions which were enough without being overfaced or still hungry . Bar prices were competitive for a 4* hotel. Breakfast was good but only plain yoghurt available in a bowl rather than individual flavoured pots but i understand that this is happening in many hotels to reduce waste.

hot tub in the swimming pool could have been warmer!! and a constructive criticism rather than a complaint would be that there is no shower gel in the pool area shower and no towel hook.

The location was fabulous, the hotel communal areas were very nicely presented. The staff were so lovely and friendly (Janette and Ryan were lovely on reception) , they couldn't do enough for us. The food was very good. We upgraded our room to the Eddleston suite which was fabulous, just idyllic.

The original room we had was a bit small, shabby and dated but more importantly was next to the lift so we asked to upgrade. The suite had no bottled water which was a bit odd. We were told to buy it from the bar (the suite upgrade wasn't cheap so bottled water would have been nice included). We were woke at 5.30 by the milkman delivering, and then the laundry van shortly after. Our suite was the front of the hotel and we had to shut the windows as people were outside talking and smoking before 7am which wasn't ideal, the smell was wafting into our room. As lovely as the staff were and the hotel was, it was a shame. The hotel, in places was also in need of some tlc.

The staff made this shirt stay so enjoyable. They were pleasant, good humoured and helpful. The young restaurant waiters in particular were exceptional. I informed reception that I was deaf and I was impressed to be given a device which would wake me if the fire alarm was sounded. The rooms were comfortable and clean. I ate in the restaurant and the food was very good. I would certainly stay again if visiting the area.

The staff were all lovely and welcoming especially in the restaurant on Monday night and at reception o Tuesday morning. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was relaxing. We had a lovely walk in the grounds. We knew about the polish map but not the walk down to the altar which was beautiful.

The bedrooms are a little tired and two people need two chairs. It was also very very warm at night which kept us awake. More English language leaflets about the Polish map maybe available in the hotel so they don't get rain damaged. If they were available we didn't see them.

The whole Castle experience was amazing & the location. Staff are amazing, lovely place for a break.

Have stayed at the Castle a few times now, but on both occasion have found the shower to be very unsatisfactory & does not meet up to the standards of a lovey venue. Would recommend to remove the bath & put in a proper shower cubicle with a thermostatic controlled pressure shower. When you are staying at a place like Barney Castle, the least you would expect would be a decent shower.

Loved everything. My only criticism would be that you can hear the people in the rooms next to you quite loudly. Saying that, I appreciate it's an old castle and whenever it was originally turned into a hotel, they didn't take this into consideration, nothing to do with the current owners I'm sure. The staff and service are exceptional and the food is great.
