Character property, friendly staff, easy parking, great food. Win Green room was spacious & quiet, with good ventilation (opening windows overlooking front and back of property). Wasn't hot or stuffy at all. Ceiling height is better than expected for an old property, didn't hit my head on the beam & I'm well over 6 ft. Back door key provided if you need to come back late at night. Village is picturesque & super quiet at night. Went a bit out of my way to stay here, but glad I did, way nicer than a holiday inn which was about the same price.
Nothing much not to like. Nit picking: orange juice at breakfast could be upgraded to freshly squeezed for not much cost (would've been happy to pay more). Room fridge makes a little noise, maybe could be relocated? Could hear the footsteps in the room above, but not sure how easy it is to sound proof an old property and wouldn't put me off booking the same room again.

Breakfast was excellent
Whilst the room was spacious and the bed very comfortable, I felt the bathroom was lacking in that there was only shower gel- no body lotion, bath robe or any of the additions that make such a difference. Tea/coffee were in the room - no biscuits and the tv was very small and obviously the signal was difficult as we could only get BBC1 or foreign channels! However, the staff were very nice and the food excellent. Oh and whilst the pub is enchanting and very old with an excellent extension - the very steep staircase up to the bedrooms has an extremely worn carpet and should really be changed probably annually as first impressions are most important.

Honestly we couldn’t fault our stay even if we tried! The staff upon arrival were so welcoming and friendly, took us up to our room and showed us around, providing all information we could need before leaving us to our own devices. We stayed in the Ashcombe which was absolutely stunning, lovely views out of the windows and a very cozy atmosphere. The room was spotless and the bathroom was exactly as we had hoped - booking specifically for the bathtub - which had a relaxing spa-like feel to it. I will note if you’re someone who likes a shower this may not be your ideal room as it can get a little wet! It was mentioned in the welcome information that time had been spent selecting premium bedding for both the sheets and pillows, which was very much apparent upon getting into bed! A wonderful nights sleep on the massive bed was had, the mattress was very comfortable and room very quiet and peaceful - it did get a little warm however a fan is provided and opening the windows for a little while did the trick! In terms of food, this place really is a little tucked away gem. Our evening meal was, firstly, stunning. The dining room is beautifully done, with a warm atmosphere I can only imagine is improved in the summertime with late sunsets. The chairs surprisingly comfortable which we didn’t expect being fully wooden, and the tables spacious which is not often the case when dining for two. Our meal was exceptional. I had the leeks with rarebit to start, and my partner the potted crab - both of which left us sucking our spoons after the last bite. We did pause for concern here (both being quite hungry) as the plating of the starters did elude to a more fine dining/ small portion style experience, however we needn’t have worried. Having both been tempted by the burger on the menu, we were each treated to a grand plate each with chips to spare.
Rooms can get a little warm, but fans are provided and windows opened to create a breeze which cools it down quickly.

The Royal Oak delivers on many levels. It has had a first-class makeover with extensive attention to detail. A genuine pleasure staying here. Worthy of particular mention was the lady member of staff of duty for breakfast and checkout on 25th. What a super personable and professional young person.
The room (Ashcombe) was incredibly spacious and comfortable. Only a small observation and that was trying not to spray areas of the bathroom outside the bath with the handheld shower head. Doesn't come too easy with an old fart like me.

We loved everything about The Royal Oak. The location, decor, ambience and food were all excellent. The chef went over and above to create a wonderful meal I could eat with my combination of dietary requirements and to adapt a breakfast dish to suit my needs. The breakfast and evening meal waitresses were both lovely, really helpful friendly and great. Our room was great and the Inn itself is lovely.
The area from the pub leading up to the bedrooms is a little bit shabby and so a bit of a disappointment after the pub which is lovely and as an entrance leading up to the bedrooms, which are also great.

We stayed for my husbands birthday as he’s quite the Topgear/Grand Tour fan. It’s a beautiful pub and the room was gorgeous, we were told we had been upgraded on arrival and stayed in Win Green. Lovely big room with en-suite and a very comfortable bed! We had dinner and enjoyed the chateaubriand steak platter for two which was cooked to perfection! The staff were all lovely from checking in, to dinner, to breakfast in the morning which was also amazing. Definitely recommend and will be back again.
Personally the room was too warm for me, but a fan was supplied already so I made use! Otherwise everything was brilliant.

I came to stay because James May showed off his newly co-owned pub on YouTube. I knew immediately it would be a pleasant stay, but in reality it was even better. There was not a single thing out of order. The food was wonderful, the staff friendly and the room very comfortable. I felt very welkome from start to finish. The pub itself is situated in beautiful countryside with many places to explore. If I get the chance, I will definitely come back to this lovely place.

Our family of four was on a two-week tour of the UK and the Royal Oak was our last big splurge night. We are fans of James May and when we found out he was an investor we were keen to stay in his Inn. The space has been beautifully renovated, the staff is friendly and welcoming and the rooms are comfy and well-appointed. We had a delicious dinner, including cocktails made with Mr. May's gin, and a wonderful complimentary breakfast in the morning. It was a perfect end to our vacation. Our day was full starting at Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm Shop, then Stonehenge, and ending at The Royal Oak so, it was all pretty perfect!

Friendly and attentive staff. A lovely pub with accomodation. Food was lovely. Bed was very comfortable and made for a good nights rest.
Room had many scuff marks, and wall area behind tea coffee making area had staining which needed attention. Taps in bathroom required over tighting to prevent it dripping or running. Some fixtures and fittings in bathroom where a bit tired i.e towel rail had alot of rust markings. Windows had many cobwebs.

The complimentary breakfast was fantastic. Great service with every change to a breakfast made. (Example, Poached egg hard boiled instead of runny). The room was great with fantastic sized bed but partner felt that for the price the room that it should've had a bathtub with it. Evening dinner menu was really nice. Having fresh bottled water in the room was a great little touch along with the cafetiere.
For the length of the room from the bed, the TV on the wall could've have been bigger and the little bigger. Also, the little fridge seemed like an after thought considering the quality of the overall room.
