the property and facilities were great. we had the free breakfast one day and it was most adequate. it was on offer very day though a little early for us (7-8am) the bathroom downstairs was excellent, the best thing was hardly any of the other guests used it so we could book it when we wished. they also had a ski rental shop affiliated to the accommodation that had very reasonable rates and they also organised our lift passes at a decent price

It was everything I expected of a traditional ryokan, warm room, comfortable futon and fantastic quilt. Shared bathrooms were very clean and accessible. Free traditional rice cake for breakfast prepared by host. The price was value for money at approx AU$68 per night.

We really enjoyed our stay at Kawatatsu. The staff was really friendly and accommodating. Our room was spacious and clean. There's also free breakfast. They have an onsen in their bath which was quite nice. Location is good as well, walking distance from the main area. Absolute value for money.
Nothing. I love everything.

We broke up the trip and stayed at Kawatatsu and Aigakusou around the corner. Kawatatsu was a similar property as Aigakusou but more expensive and less comfortable. For example, Kawatatsu asked us to put on our own duvet, make our bed etc, no kimono, the shower is on a timer so you have to keep pressing a button to make the water come out, very low water pressure, the shampoo, handwash, body wash was of the cheapest quality. I kept thinking the soaps are diluted, but I think it is acutally how the product is. The room was smaller than Aigakusou even though it was more expensive. They only give one small, thin towel at a time and that was uncomfortable. Versus at Aigakusou 1. Endless clean towels 2. Good quality, normal supermarket shampoo, handwash, body wash 3. Strong water pressure in shower. 4. Clean kimono given to wear for comfort 5. Breakfast is included but it is a rice ball (hard to go out and find good breakfast if you're trying to ski in the morning) Overall, I recommend that you keep looking for similar priced lodging. It is a decent choice if all others are full.

The miso soup & Chicken Onigiri breakfast was very nice. We were given detailed notes on the availability of the local public onsen but decided to stick with the our Ryokan's onsen as it was private, very clean and quiet and brilliant given our own time limitations. The parking (JPY500) was immediately opposite the Ryokan, easily accessed and clear of snow. Also appreciated the high level of cleanliness of the establishment.
I would have rated this stay far more favorably if not for the fact that when we returned from the Nozawa Fire Festival, our beds were not made up on the tatami mats. From experience, I have always had futons made up for sleep in local Ryokans so this was quite a surprise after getting back late from the village green. Having to work out the linen, futon and quilt set up wasnt much fun after standing for almost 4 hours at the Fire Festival!
