Best value hotel room for a family of 4 anywhere near Death Valley National Park. Delightfully unique old hotel with both historical and theatrical murals, old ballet photos on display, spacious common room and dining room, a small library of books, helpful staff, and a full-size fridge and freezer guests can use. We followed the directions to let the hot water drip in the shower for 15 minutes before using it, and then had plenty of hot water for all 4 of us to shower. We would love to stay here again!
The water softener affects the flavor of the tap water, so just be aware. A bit of a smell in the hallway related to the plumbing.

We enjoyed staying at this hotel, It is a 100 years old building so it is not modern, but you get your own bathroom which we appreciated a lot. The king room was very spacious and we loved the bed which had the most comfortable mattress from all our trip (we did stay at 6hotels). There is no fridge in each room but you can use the one in the common kitchen where you can also get some ice. There is a restaurant maybe 10minutes by car from the place. The hotel is located on the road to Death Valley and costs much cheaper than hotels in the park which is a big plus. Also, the lady at the reception was really nice and friendly which we always appreciate when we stay somewhere.
Looks a little uninviting from the outside , you could think it is closed... maybe a bigger sign : "we are open" ?

Just for the experience you have to stop and sleep here. This is a very old building in need of a LOT OF money to be put back into its former glory. The history of this place is rich. The original paintings are fantastic and the opera house is a beauty. If you believe in ghosts and spirits this makes the experience even grander. Connie was great in showing us around and was very keen to have a positive impact on improving the building. There are no shops/restaurants around so get your own food and use the communal tables, fridge and microwave to eat. The bedroom and bathroom were clean and you could tell with a big refurbishment they would look stunning (with some original feature). There are plenty of free parking spaces and this is next door to the Death Valley so a perfect visit at this time of the year!
The plumbing and waste pipes are original and underneath the building so you will get a musty smell but nothing that bothered us, this is all part of staying in an old building.

We turned up and what somewhat alarmed at the whole thing. I wont lie, it feels like a creepy place in the middle of no where and a bit like the start of a horror film. BUT stick with it. The charm of the place will really grow on you. Do the tour of the opera house, you're missing out if you don't. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The rooms don't have TVs but are perfectly comfy and the Wifi is good. Its charming unique but a bit weird, and who doesn't want that for an overnight in death valley.
Its 10 mins away from the nearest food so bring supplies!

Very interesting place with an interesting history! You can feel the age of the building, and even so it's moderately well maintained. Beds were very comfortable. We arrived late but even so we received a message with all the necessary info and the keys were waiting for us in the late arrivals box as expected. Free coffee was available 24h which was unexpected.
The guest door wasn't working correctly, we had to input the code multiple times for it to open. Even if the building was old, walls could use some maintenance, the plaster on our bathroom's walls was falling to pieces in some places; nothing major, and it was still functioning correctly and well cleaned.

Loved the tour! Staff was very helpful. It was like stepping back in time and even though there are repairs to be made, no TV and strange plumbing were all part of the adventure!! I do think having the restaurant back is important!! My thought is invite food truck venders to sell and make the cafe the place to eat it until the possibility of reopening the cafe is possible. Even having a simple breakfast with the great coffee that was available would help not having to drive so far for a meal. All said I would definitely return!!
Nothing really as it is understood as funds available there will be improvements with repairs.

The ambience is unique, even charmingly bizarre, a throwback to the aspirational culture of the old west. Ghosts of opera within 35 minutes of the most remote desert national park? I enjoyed the tour of the old theater, with its remarkably fresh -looking curtains and whimsical murals. The hotel itself is rich in historical paintings and photographs and other archival materials. The staff were friendly and helpful after I was initially rebuffed having joined the tour later than 6pm. Food is available 15 minutes up the road at a casino.
I assume the property suffered damage during the unusual weather of early spring-- the floods that fed the lake in Death Valley seem to have adversely affected the surrounding pavements and the underlying plumbing. The visitor soon becomes accustomed to the faint unpleasant odor

very charming; lots of history; filled with memorabilia. Tour of the Opera House was fun and informative.
Hotel is now run by a non-profit, and seems to be operating on a shoestring. The hotel needs lots of upkeep- paint peeling, plumbing struggling- shower was just a trickle; water temp fluctuates. But- overall, I liked the place- the grounds were nice to walk around and explore, inside and out- fascinating glimpse into the past.

First and last, the price. We wanted to spend a few days in Death Valley but the prices in the park are astronomical for little more than a Motel 6 room, and food prices there are 2-3 times higher than normal. Amargosa was around $100 a night, and the location, a half hour drive from the sightseeing center of Furnace Creek, was quite convenient, esp. since the drive to Furnace Creek passed two of the top sights, Dante's View and Zabriskie Point. Also, Amargosa itself is a tourist sight--you pay $10 for a tour of the opera house and learn the amazing story of Marta Becket who spent 50 years there putting on shows. The walls of the hotel and opera house were all painted by Marta, and the scenes are wonderful. We also liked (and needed) the microwave and large fridge provided, since the hotel serves no food and you have to bring your own. The nearest restaurant is at a casino 7 miles away, and that can get quite crowded.
You have to be up for a little funkiness. The hotel is a giant maintenance headache, and the small staff can't really keep up. Our sink in Room 2 wouldn't drain, and they couldn't fix it in the 4 days we were there. The WiFi worked fine, but don't expect a TV or radio, except in the "commons room" where you can eat and play games and watch the DVD "Amargosa" about Marta's life. I am really worried that this place won't last, so if you have a little adventure in your soul, stay here while you can!

quaintness and quirkiness of the whole establishment, its historic character, the old photos and murals (even though they were peeling!), the ability to have tea constantly and coffee in the morning, and to make your own meals (breakfast and dinner) using the microwave, toaster and frig in the room by the old dining room. This should be made better known in the advertising of the hotel.
The fact that you could make use of their cooking facilities and dining space which was not at all clear in advertising.
