This is a traditional old pub, serving proper beer. We liked it, a very welcome change to the current trend for pubs to be refurbished in duck egg grey paint, plastic floors and canteen chairs like the Cartmel pubs. Yes, our room, indeed the whole pub might have seen better days but it was clean and comfortable. Very friendly staff and handy for Cartmel races (just 40 mins via small road and good path or you could catch a bus for a fiver).

Note: They do not serve food other than the cooked breakfast. We walked to the Hope and Anchor which is 10 minutes mins away in Flookborough. That place was very entertaining as the service was very Fawlty Towersesque, it was hilarious unfortunately not enough room here to tell the whole tale. But the dinner there was excellent on both nights - superb. Also note that parking is on the street, not a problem for us as we got a good spot. We did notice that there was room for one car in front of the pub for those who get there first.

Breakfast was good - full English with option of cereal and excellent coffee. Breakfast service was good. The location is excellent, in a very nice traditional historic village. It is only a short drive from Cartmel. The proprietor is friendly and helpful.

Parking was not easy - I arrived late and had to drive around to find a spot, a short walk from the hotel. There is little soundproofing between rooms. This doesn't bother me but it seemed to bother a dog in the next room which objected every time I made a sound. I love dogs so this isn't a complaint but the dog may not have been happy.

Beautiful old English country pub, in stunning surroundings next to a river. The bar room is very quaint and comfortable with a good selection of wines and beers. Our room had a good size bed with bath and shower. Breakfast was a full English with a choice of cereals. Our host was exceptional, he went above and beyond to help us when we got ourselves stuck when out..I think when you go to this level to help your guests you deserve 5 stars which I'm happy to give.. fantastic service and we will be definitely staying here again... Thank you for a great experience. Jon and Jeanette.

A welcoming atmosphere from all of the staff and locals. Johnathan, the pub landlord was accommodating and happy to chat and tell us a little about the area along with Monty the chief dog of the pub who we loved meeting. Johnathan made a great breakfast in the morning. Mike was also on hand any time which made us feel at home. We had a good nights sleep and the bathroom was clean & tidy. Dog friendly which is also a YES from us!

We couldn't really fault anything during our stay other than the room we were staying in could do with a little TLC.

Tasty full english breakast with local good quality ingredients and good coffee. Very much a local eating house and pub and cheerfully busy until late evening but my room was quiet, warm and comfortable with a pleasing view across the village of Cark. Beer was good and they had pride in their CAMRA cask marque.

I wasn't asked how I would like my full english in the morning although the chef had made a point of speaking to me after my evening meal about my options.
