A lovely mix of luxury, simplicity, and elegance. It's peaceful and beautiful. A young man (Shohi? Shohei?) explained everything and answered all our questions in English. I showed up in sort of rugged, plain clothes and was treated with the same courtesy that they would someone in all Louis Vuitton. Location very convenient to town and hike. The onsen was lovely and tidy, staff very pleasant, facility and rooms gorgeous. Def top 5 of places I've ever stayed, wish we had stayed longer. We really liked the inventiveness and quality of the dinner and breakfast. There were some dishes that I didn't care for, like the fish liver pate, but it was a .5" cube and a tiny portion of the rest of the meal. So many little plates of seasonal and local produce/fish, soups, pickles...trying so many foods was fun. A gracious lady in a beaufitul kimono welcomed us and upon check-out farewelled us with a "we hope you can come again soon," to which my answer was, "we hope so, too!"
I liked everything just as it was.

We (couple and an 8 month old baby) stayed for 3 nights in November and everything was great. The staff were amazing. Sho-In and the rest of the team treated us like family and were so attentive. The food was phenomenal with a different kaiseki meal every night and morning. The onsen were adequately hot and beautiful, also with a cold plunge pool and sauna. Gardens out the front of the dining area were also beautiful. The room (we stayed on level 3) was great, comfortable beds, beautiful lookout to see the autumn colours. Parking available for a small fee of 500 yen per night. We cant wait to come back!

Spacious table-seating in the dining room, all tables having a view of the garden (really a park-like setting) and a menu that deserves an international rating at the highest levels, and that applies to both dinner (the landscape outside the glass wall is softly illuminated) and breakfast that offers Western coffee selections and the best of Japanese tea. We booked two nights and we were delightfully surprised to find that both the dinner and breakfast menus were varied. The wait staff and chefs paced the meal to our habits, and as English-speaking guests we never were challenged in communications.
Absolutely nothing comes to mind. We are 70+ years and arrived by bus, finding a short, easy walk to the front door. Our room-guide carefully explained how to use the room’s equipment, in very good English. In short, there was nothing to note negatively.

A lovely experience in Unzen. Hotel is a nice mix of traditional ryokan and western hotel. The best of both worlds! Onsen is beautiful. The food was plentiful and very nice, in a traditional style. The staff made a great effort to communicate with us in English, which was appreciated.
Parking was an additional charge yet was in the hotel's own parking lot. The town is very quiet. Hotel appears to have been renovated since the photos but is quite lovely, so not an issue.

Great location in Unzen, close to town, Unzen ropeway and walks Very chic, restrained elegance. Very professional welcome and private escort to room. Quiet restful beautiful setting gazing out to garden and autumn foliage. Excellent evening Kaisei meal. Excellent inside and outside onsen. Room was just gorgeous.
Situated right next to The Gates of Hell springs, outside the room the sulphurous smell was noticeable. Important to keep airconditioning on in room.

A fantastic stay in a beautiful ryokan. We loved every minute of it: the views into the sculptured garden, the spacious and beautifully designed room, the bath, the food, the hospitality. With just a few steps from the hotel, you access the Unzen jigoku geothermal fields.
Not the hotel’s fault, but the bed was too hard for me and my back problems. (A common issue I encounter in most places in Japan).

This ryokan spells class from the moment you walk into the lobby. Wonderfully helpful staff, first class, spotless, large rooms and more quality and well presented food than you can cope with. Good sized spa facilities and set in beautiful gardens.
Air conditioning was a little noisy, other than that there is nothing not to like about this place.

Great location. Exceptionally scenic. Great walking route just outside. Beautiful garden. Modern hotel / Ryokan. Good hot spring bath.
Not a very warm welcome considering how expensive it is to stay. We were allocated a poor table for dinner one of only a few with no view of the floodlit garden. Food not exceptional. Extra charge for private hot spring bath.

Excellent in all aspects. Good room size, nice mattress, has private family onsen, very friendly and helpful staff, delicious and fresh breakfast and dinner. Located next to a national park, very convenient for morning and evening walks.
The room should have sofa instead of chairs.

Everything. From the meticulous spread of breakfast n dinner, to the comfy room and friendly staff. Location right by the onsen mountain. Love this place.
