If you're venturing all the way to Koyasan, then complete the experience and immerse yourself in this memorable shukubo experience. The staff and monks are genuine and courteous. The lodging facilities are comfortable and refined with nice touches and attention to detail. The food, although vegetarian, is exquisite - amazing flavors and textures that will satisfy. Alcohol is also available at extra cost. The morning prayer service and sutra recitation is guided as is the Ajikan meditation session which follows. Fudo-in seems smaller than some other lodging venues, which makes it more attractive and quieter. Location is perfect for bus stop #8.
The walls are very thin (just the nature of construction) so tourists/guests need to understand that they need to be courteous and quiet as adjacent rooms can hear them.

This was incredible- the monks were the best as was the staff- this is def the upper scale of the temple stay experiences- rooms were VERY nice ( full tv ac bathroom etc) the communal baths were very cool and so needed after a day hiking about , dinner and breakfast were ELABORATE 10-20 wee courses, beautifully laid out and in a 450 years old dining space, I attended the morning g prayers which was so worth it- when I arrived early I asked if I could just leave my bag but they just showed me to my room earl- SO kind- the property is stunning, room view stunning, location perfect!! I came from Kyoto on the 8:10AM Keihan bus DIRECT from Kyoto station, drop off at Koyasan buss station- 5 min walk to Fu Doin- going back to Osaka hah! Bus to the Cable car, cable car, 3 trains mamma mia….anyways, DO THIS- Koyasan do not miss: the cemetery! ( you could spend hours here) Awesome Rock garden at the main temple Kongobu Ji, the huge Dango Garan area- I walked all the time peeking at other areas
Nothing- this was a perfect experience. The dining experience alone was worth the price.

2 couples shared a large room (junior suite). We slept on futons, shared a bathroom and there were 2 sinks. There was a private patio and a private onsen. Dinner was a fantastic vegetarian delight as was breakfast the next morning. We enjoyed the morning temple service before breakfast. The grounds/gardens are gorgeous. There is great infrastructure at Koyasan and I wish I could have stayed longer-like 4 nights. Next time~
The slippers they gave us were too large and were slipping off our feet (especially on the stairs) which could have caused a trip and fall. Property photos are accurate on Booking.Com.

Staying in Koyasan Shukubo Fudoin was an one of a kind experience. Everything was very special. The people who welcomed us couldn’t be more polite and kind. As soon as you enter you sense the uniqueness and the energy of this sacred place. You experience another side of Japanese culture and get to learn about Bouddhisme. On top of that, the dinner and breakfast are sensational with many little delicious plates. I also strongly recommend to take part in the morning ritual as it is very special. Staying at Koyasan Shukubo Fudoin is an ideal establishment to experience all sides of Japanese culture during your visit of this beautiful country!

Our stay here was very special. The journey to Koyasan itself is very memorable and enjoyable. The shukubo is right next to a bus stop, which is convenient. Our room was quite traditional, but was enhanced by modern luxuries like AC, TV, and a nice bathroom. The meal provided was amazing and served in a beautiful dining room with a lot of history. Joining the morning prayers and meditation was an amazing experience as well. We greatly appreciated the effort put in to translate and explain the different rituals to foreign visitors in English.
The yukata provided are a bit small for taller men, but I guess that's to be expected! There were some large spiders outside of our window, some making it into the room, but thankfully we didn't notice them until the next morning (also, I think it's part of the experience :D) There were also some guests that decided to stay with their young children who could be heard running down the halls, or would run around the dining room as people were enjoying their breakfast. That's not really the fault of the shukubo, but something to keep in mind, as I think most come here to enjoy the peace and quiet.

The incredibly beautiful meals served in a private room. Morning prayer. And especially the fire ceremony they do every 28th of the month. Very special opportunity. I was told by someone from Japan this is one of the few authentic ones in town. It was almost 2 hours long. The gardens were beautiful with fall colors. The rooms with private bath were definitely the way to go. Could soak and enjoy the yes lit up outside. Not just a small garden outside the window.
Futons were not very comfortable unless you doubled them up

The temple/hotel is lovely, we had a smaller Japanese room which was of good size and an own bathroom which is always nice. The food in this hotel was splendid, it's one of the reasons we picked this rather pricey place because all the reviews raved about the food and they had a point. We loved everything we ate here and we are carnivores!
The price is a stretch. I am not sure if it is due to our booking, 3 months in advance, but we stayed in many beautiful places in Japan, with a half board and in comparison paying 500 EUR for 1-night stay is a bit too much. We still loved it, but I would not go again if the price remains this high (I have been in a Koyasan temple before with half board for 2 people for way less than this a few years back during the sakura season). It was a splurge, which we consciously made, but we wouldn't again.

Outstanding and unique experience. Warm welcome (we arrived early and were able to check in immediately). Good location for exploring Koyasan town. Beautiful surroundings, stunning interior decor in the dining rooms, nice onsen, astonishingly good vegetarian food. The temple master made us feel very welcome at the prayer service and explained everything. Super friendly staff and smiling monks :)
Nothing (though some might find the lack of a private shower or bath facilities in the morning an issue- we did have a private modern Japanese toilet and washbasin so it was fine).

Beautiful space, lovely staff supporting the temple and shukubo. Very clean. Great location in Koyasan. Beautiful vegan meal at breakfast and dinner, tea and snacks provided in your room. Such a unique experience. As they note, it’s not a hotel.
I believe I paid much more with it being a holiday, but the price was exorbitant. Please note any area except your sleeping room, the dining room, or temple won’t have heat. This means the toilet area attached to your room is unheated as well as all hallways and common areas. The shared bath does have space heaters. Just prepare with layers.

Shukubo Fudoin is set back from the main road but is in the centre of the village and in close walking distance to all the main sights. The rooms were immaculate and peaceful. We arrived early but the rooms were ready and our host explained the protocols clearly and with great kindness, before serving us a cup of tea and a lovely mōchi treat. The bathhouse was available for our use from late afternoon until 8pm. The meals in the evening and morning were generous, tasty and beautifully presented. The monks and their team were humble, polite and completely charming. Prayers at 6am was a great privilege to participate in. Although we were there for only one night, we left refreshed and rested.
It was all exactly as we hoped and more.
